The Journey of a Waiting Girl - Ifunanya's Story

The Journey of a Waiting Girl

"Wait!"

Unsure and uncertain if that command was directed to her.

She continued her frantic and near endless search.

Then came the certain one, "Ifunanya wait!"

This time it was precise and clear. The instruction was from her teacher, Mr Reality and she knew better to obey than offer a sacrifice of excuse. As a student who from cradle has always been on the good books, she dared not be found wanting else the numerous awards reckoned to her behavior be questioned or revoked.

Looking through the window blind, she could see her friends advancing, crossing over to the other side of engagement. She wondered as she paced through the hindering command, why she must wait. The wind blew, and with that impulse she would want to cross the line and allow the force of peer pressure.

"What if I summon faith and move?" She asked no one but herself. Even my neighbour just joined the moving train, why not me. But she doesn't know the route better than I do neither does she catwalks better than I do. I mean my physiognomy appeals to the sight than hers.

Wearied and worried, uncertain if she actually heard right, Ifunanya would jog to Mr Reality and ask:

"Am I actually supposed to wait?"

"Yes and evermore," came the tart response.

Still confused , "will I ever get to the destination of my friends and neighbour?"

"Yes. Even if you don't, you will arrive at your own destination."

"Won't it be late?" She argued.

"Nevermore." He coughed twice and with a face decorated with experience light up a smile continued, "there is no darkness in this journey but if the night meets you on the way, remember the moon."

Ifunanya would still be reflecting on that statement when her teacher began again, "you know the topics I have taught you from the vast curriculum?"

"Yes sir, I remember them all."

"Mention them," he asked.

"Purpose building, skills acquisition and etiquettes, dream emancipation and, and.... Oh I have forgotten the last one. Let me think about it."

"Oh! I remember it is, thriving while waiting."

"Very good. You are my good student, now it's time to practice. Use those lessons and build your heart, your head and your health."

"Eureka!" Ifunanya shouted. It is a eureka moment.

On sunny days you will see Ifunanya gathering things, bits by bits to build her best for rainy days. Sitting at the river bank, she met a group of ladies who are thriving. Like her, they are building too but in hope. Thriving while waiting for their desired expectations Seeing Funke, Hadiza and Effiong made her realize that though she's alone, she's not lonely.

With this confidence she muttered, "I will not stop building."
